Preliminary Task - Research- Props

I phoned my Aunt, who is of an older generation, and asked her about the kind of things that would be seen in an average kitchen in the 1940's. She provided me with some very useful insights and also lent me several items that were later used as props within our production.

Enamel bowls, as seen in the picture on the left, were used in the 1940's because they were very durable as they didn't break as easily as glass or ceramic.
As these bowls were very durable they lasted longer which meant that people got more for their money at the time.

Many women wore head scarves whilst working in order to keep their hair out of their faces.
These scarves were often rather plain or floral patterned and usually made of silken material.
In the picture to the left there is a selection of headscarves, all of which are genuine 1940's head scarves.

In order to make the house feel more like a home we included a genuine photo of a family from the 1930's.

The small things like the jar filled with utensils provided us with an authentic looking set as we tried to incorporate as many little details as possible. For example, every kitchen in the 1940's would have had wooden utensils such as the rolling pin and spoon pictured on the left.

With a film set in the past, such as ours set in 1940's Britain, I think that it is really important to pay close attention to detail to make the audience believe that the film was actually set a long time ago. Therefore it would appear strange to see modern house hold objects, such as a microwave, in a film set in the 1940's.
