For Female costumes I searched google for examples. From my research I discovered that floral patterns featured quite heavily. Also I found that it didn't matter if the dress was more 1920's or 30's in style because at the time the motto was make-do and mend, which meant that it would be unlikely that an ordinary woman would have all the latest fashions.
From the research that I collected I found this dress which fits in with 1940's conventions due to the floral pattern, it's knee length and doesn't have a revealing neckline. Also it is a very simple design which means it's in keeping with the 1940's style as button and other embellishments were limited.
